Mired in grief after the sudden death of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) begins experiencing a disturbing presence in the lake house he built for her. Beth begins to look into both her husband's death and what is happening in her house.
I first became aware of this movie when I saw its creepy trailer at the cinema; I Googled it as soon as I got home and watched it as soon as I was able. Disturbing and atmospheric, this movie is highly original and very interesting viewing. Rebecca Hall gives an incredible performance; every scene is heightened because of her - you believe in (and CARE about) everything that is happening to Beth because of her stunning turn. In less deft hands than Hall's, this may have become a B-grade thriller. Watch for the scene at the school where Beth teaches, between her and a complaining parent - she will give you chills.
Genuine thrills, decent effects and a slow-building mystery back up, and are ultimately greatly enhanced by, Hall's amazing performance. The reverse imagery is quite disconcerting, as is what is glimpsed out of the corners of the frames.
See if you can work out what is happening before Beth does!
