A quiet Maine town is terrorised by a monster in the Black Lake. A team of locals and out of towners must determine what the threat is and how to stop it, before they are eaten too.
Great performances coupled with a bitingly sarcastic script make this an hilarious 'monster' movie. Kelly (Bridget Fonda), a prissy New York paleontologist, is escaping a messy work situation and comes to Maine to examine a tooth found at the site of a grisly death. Sheriff Hank (Brendan Gleeson) along with his deputies and Fish & Game Officer Jack (Bill Pullman) are investigating the death. Hector (Oliver Platt), a mythology professor, arrives to cause chaos and to advise the team of what he believes is really in Black Lake.
I find everyone so funny in this movie, and of course Betty White's Mrs Bickerman is a foul-mouthed standout, but Platt owns the screen in this one. His Hector is hilarious, and can be both pompous and sympathetic in equal measure. One of my favourite performances of his.
Great Line: "No! I keep getting hit with heads!"
