Written by: Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Swoosie Kurtz, Marley Shelton, Danny Trejo, John Carroll Lynch
Jimmy (Jake Gyllenhaal) was born without an immune system and consequently lives in a plastic bubble in his parents' house, where he is extremely sheltered by his very religious mother (Swoosie Kurtz, with John Carroll Lynch as his father). Jimmy is content with his lot until Chloe (Marley Shelton) moves in next door. Will Jimmy risk it all for Chloe?
I have always found this movie hilarious. I stumbled on it late one night on TV, flicking through channels, and ended up watching from start to finish, cracking up the whole time (and sometimes feeling bad about it). There was apparently some controversy at the time of its release due to making light of SCID, though quite a few things get a skewering in this movie so its best to watch without your PC hat on. (Don't get me me wrong, my PC hat is HUGE but this is a light comedy, people!). It has since gone on to gain cult status.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a delight as Jimmy, and I defy you not to sing "Bright and Shiny" for at least a couple of days after watching. Fun cameos, off-colour jokes, a Land of the Lost obsession, and of course Lorraine and Todd - what more could you want??
It is inspired by 1976's Boy in the Plastic Bubble.
Great Line: "Oh jeez, I don't know. I don't know bitch, I got a LOT to do"
